Common Questions and Answers
Q: Do you have beginner classes?
A: Beginners classes are now offered at Coal
Harbour Community Centre. At W.E.C.C. and The Gathering Place all levels
generally practice together, although beginners may work on more basic
forms of techniques that the rest of the class are practicing.
Q: How do I start?
A:
Just show up, a first trial class is free.
Introduce yourself to Sensei and ask if you may join in a class.
Q: Do I need to get in shape first?
A: No, Aikido can be practised by people of all levels of fitness and can help you get in shape.
Q: What should I wear?
A:
Clean comfortable clothes will do to start. If
you want to continue you will be expected to purchase a uniform (called a
gi) available at martial arts suppliers. Ask for an Aikido or Judo-
style gi (more sturdy than Karate-style gis).
Q: How often should I practice?
A: It is recommended that one practice at least twice a week in order to progress.
Q: How long will it take to get a black belt?
A: If you are concerned about this you might want
to look elsewhere. Learning Aikido is a long process, the earning of a
black belt being not a goal but just a signpost to pass along the way
(usually after eight to ten years of regular practice).
